butie van speelfilms zei Mizer alleen dat dat
later wel komt.
Het volgende onderwerp dat aan de orde kwam
was The Popcorn Channel, een nieuw kabel
televisie station dat 24 uur per dag trailers uit
zendt met onder in beeld de aanvangstijden van
de films in de verschillende bioscopen in de
buurt. Angela Pumo, executive director van The
Popcorn Channel vertelde dat tijdens het verto
nen van de short- en de longform trailers
(making ofs) een derde van het beeld informatie
geeft over de bioscopen in de buurt met vermel
ding van adres, telefoonnummer, films, rating,
lengte, prijs en aanvangstijden. The Popcorn
Channel is een joint venture tussen The New
York Times en Torstar. De inkomsten van het
kanaal komen uit bijdragen van de studios en de
kabelmaatschappijen. Voorlopig zal het alleen
een informatie kanaal blijven.
The Awards Banquet
Tijdens het laatste diner werden de meeste
ShoWest Awards uitgereikt. Als eerste sprak
President Clinton via het grote scherm de aan
wezigen toe. Hij besloot zijn toespraak met: 'As
an art and movie lover I appreciate all you do. I
send my best whishes to all of you for what pro-
misses to be a memorable anniversary year. I
urge you to keep up the good work. Going to the
movies is one of the things that the president
still gets to do and I do it every chance I get,
each time with gratitude to all of you for your
fine work."
Voor de meeste Amerikanen was dit "the icing
on the cake". Julia Ormond, Will Smith en
Martin Lawrence kregen de Stars of Tomorrow
Awards uitgereikt. Paul Attanasio kreeg de
Screenwriter of the Year Award voor Quiz Show
en Disclosure. Twee Lifetime Achievement
Awards werden uitgereikt, aan Faye Dunaway
en Andrew Vajna. Arnold Schwarzenegger reikte
de Producer of the Year Award uit aan James
Cameron. Schwarzenegger vertelde onder ande
re: "If it wasn't for Jim Cameron I would be
yodeling in the Austrian Alps."

Robert Zemeckis
De Director of the Year Award ging naar Robert
Zemeckis. Tijdens zijn acceptatie speech bracht
hij het best de sfeer van ShoWest '95 onder
woorden. "The ultimate goal and the real thrill
of directing movies is to sit in a back row of a
movie theater and to watch the movie play.
With a real paying audience and not some
research recruited audience that we preview our
movies with, because they all become critics.
But I mean people who actually buy popcorn
and sit in the theater to watch the movie unfold.
Seeing your film or any other film makers
film and be able to feel that film move that
audience is the whole point. That's where I get a
real rush and it's that excitement that sends me
back behind the camera to make another movie.
I want to thank all of you for owning and opera-
ting movie theaters and providing a place for
audiences to see my work." Tot slot werd Demi
Mooie geëerd als Female Star of the Year en
Tom Hanks kreeg de Male Star of the Year
Award.
The Buena Vista Event
The hottest ticket in town was voor het Buena
Vista event in Burbank.
Diegenen die vanuit Las Vegas in alle haast naar
Los Angeles waren gevlogen, werden beloond
met het grootste spektakel van ShoWest '95: een
drie uur durende show met fragmenten uit Judge
Dredd, Crimson Tide, Toy Story, Dumbo Drop
en natuurlijk Pocahontas.
Op het podium verschenen onder andere Tom
Hanks, Tim Allen, Sylvester Stallone, Gene
Hackman en Denzel Washington.
Naast een big band verzorgde Randy Newman,
Alan Menken en Judy Kuhn voor de muzikale
ondersteuning.
Het geheel werd in stijl afgesloten met een
buffet. Buena Vista had outdone itself once
again.
