Met de gebeurtenissen van 11 september
nog nasmeulend op ieders netvlies, was de
jaarlijkse Oscar-uitreiking opeens een uiterst
kwetsbaar evenement geworden. Niet alleen
vanwege het feit dat het aan verblinde fanati
ci bij uitstek de mogelijkheid zou geven om
met één goedgerichte klap zowel Arnold
Schwarzenegger, John Rambo als James Bond
- de bewierookte symbolen van het Westerse
superioriteitsgevoel - te elimineren, maar ook
omdat het al te klakkeloos zwelgen in opge
klopt pathetisch feestgedruis - kenmerkend
voor dit jaarlijkse intieme feestje - een wat te
bruuske miskenning zou zijn van de explo
sieve toestand in de wereld.
Daarom overwoog het feestcomité om de
televisie-uitzending te laten plaatsvinden in
zwart-wit. Maar dit stuitte op verzet, omdat
daarmee de zenuw van de interraciale pro
blemen binnen Hollywood misschien te pijn
lijk zou worden blootgelegd. Ook het plan
om de rode loper te vervangen door een
zwarte loper werd verworpen. Witte mensen
die op zwart lopen.het zou olie op het
vuur zijn. Nee, men poogde het evenement,
dat volgens het draaiboek deze keer bijna
een kwart etmaal zou duren, te voorzien van
een sacrale sfeer en daar kwam zelfs Woody
Allen zijn bed voor uit.
En zo kwam het dat op 24 maart 2002 de
groten der Cinematografische Aarde deson
danks weer lachend, loensend, brakend, blo
zend, mummelend, mijmerend, zwelgend en
zwetend over de rode loper struinden.
Aanbeden door horden hijgende paladijnen.
En de gouden beeldjes weer werden aan
vaard in een kleurige collage van geacteerde
verbazing, plotselinge afasie en tergende tra
nen. Toch kon het feestcomité opgelucht
ademhalen: Denzel Washington en Halle
Berry stonden er gekleurd op en A Beautiful
Mind werd als symbool voor de kwetsbare
underdog bekroond met de belangrijkste
Oscars: film en regie. Het sprookje van The
Lord of the Rings was even uit. Maar niet
getreurd: delen twee tot en met acht zijn in
de maak.Want, de gouden regel in
Hollywood luidt: The Show must go on.
